Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO, a brand‑new TV series directed by Kenji Kamiyama, is slated to debut in April 2027. It belongs to the freshly launched RG Project, which was first teased earlier this year at San Diego Comic-Con 2026.

The anime will be the inaugural title in a fresh shared Gundam universe that spans TV series, video games, and other media. SOLA ANIMATION will oversee the animation production.

Bandai Namco Filmworks has framed the RG Project as a next‑gen multimedia venture anchored by an original world created by Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim), with the lore co‑developed by sci‑fi novelist Toh EnJoe. The effort links Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO to the forthcoming action title GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT, where both works share a continuous timeline while delivering separate storylines set in the same setting. The series is positioned about a century before the game’s events.

The story is described:

Three revelations arrived from an Autonomous Interstellar Object drifting through another galaxy, ushering in a golden era of prosperity that let humanity spread across the entire solar system.

Gravity Control. FTL Communication. Cognitive Materialization.

But less than a decade after its discovery, the Object began to act unpredictably, spawning a hostile, self‑replicating ecosystem.

People started calling this strange ecosystem the Apocalypse.

For three months humanity held the line against the Apocalypse in orbit above Earth. With the planet abandoned, the year was recorded as A.A. 1 – the first year After Apocalypse.

By A.A. 45, children born on the Moon and in orbital habitats have always lived under the threat of the Apocalypse.

On the lunar surface, a boy named Ray Azumi wakes up.

The anime trailer can be viewed below.

Ray Azumi, voiced by Takeo Otsuka, is portrayed as an orphan of war who lost his family in an Apocalypse attack and has been chosen as the pilot of Gundam ZERO. Takeo Otsuka also shared his thoughts on joining the series:

“Being part of this new Gundam installment is a huge honor for me. Director Kamiyama’s storyline gave me plenty to ponder with each episode, and I relished the creative challenge of every recording session. I’m also really excited to see how this media‑mix project unfolds across anime and games. I hope you’re all looking forward to Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO!”

Director Kenji Kamiyama previously reflected on crafting an entirely original Gundam timeline:

“When I was asked to imagine a Gundam set in a brand‑new timeline that isn’t part of the Universal Century or the Common Era, I began wrestling with countless questions. What would take the place of the Earth Federation and Zeon? How would the Newtype idea evolve? What becomes of Minovsky particles? And where would conflict exist in this world?

As I kept probing the essence of what makes a Gundam truly Gundam, I drifted further from the excitement that should drive the project. I paused, reminding myself that I’d been given a chance to build my own Gundam from the ground up for a series I’ve loved for years. Could anything be more thrilling? Reconnecting with that excitement let a fresh, unexpected Gundam emerge.

That Gundam is Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO.”

The debut Mobile Suit Gundam TV series launched in 1979 and grew into one of Japan’s most significant entertainment franchises. Over the years the Gundam brand has expanded into TV shows, films, OVAs, comics, novels, model kits, and video games across various eras. In contrast to earlier isolated spin‑offs, the RG Project creates a linked universe where the anime and GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT present distinct narratives set in the same continuity. The game made its first public appearance at Summer Game Fest 2026.
