TASIKMALAYA, Thecuy.com – The competition in the construction services sector increasingly requires workers to possess measurable skills.
Long‑term experience on site remains a crucial asset, yet competence now must also be proven via training and certification.
The Tasikmalaya City Department of Public Works and Spatial Planning (PUTR) strives to boost the capacity of construction workers so that local laborers are not only adept at operating equipment but also hold recognized competency certificates.

This year, one initiative taken was to hold a training session on installing lightweight steel roof trusses, organized in partnership with the Indonesian Applicator Association (HAPI). The event accommodated 30 participants and awarded training certificates.
Leli Yulita, Head of Building and Construction Services at the Tasikmalaya City PUTR Office, stated that the training is part of a broader effort to enhance the skills of local construction workers.
“Thank goodness, we collaborated with HAPI yesterday. Thirty participants received certificates for the lightweight steel roof truss installation training,” he said recently.
He explained that, in general, there is a mandate to enhance the capacity of 75 construction workers annually; however, implementation must be aligned with the region’s budgetary capabilities.
This year, the available budget is allocated for training 25 individuals. Meanwhile, through partnerships with other entities, the number of participants receiving training can increase up to 30 individuals.
In Leli’s view, attention to high‑school‑level construction workers (SMA/STM) is crucial.
Because many field workers lack skill certificates, while competency documents are increasingly required in construction work, including procurement or tender processes.

“Nowadays, tenders etc. require the submission of both expertise and skill certificates. Many of these lower‑level workers still lack such certificates,” he clarified.
All along, his office has also been working to attract participants from the construction services community, including craftsmen employed by contractor companies.
Furthermore, involving representatives from 10 districts serves as a method to broaden access to skill enhancement. Each district proposes around three individuals to join the training.
Leli hopes that, in the future, the program will not be limited to training alone.
