Rachman, who runs a workshop focusing on Suzuki VES models (Vitara, Escudo, Sidekick), explained that this shift in interest is due to the fact that many Vitara currently on the road have been altered for off‑road use. Truly stock units are becoming scarce, whereas the Escudo and Sidekick are still relatively common in their original condition.
Vitara’s role has changed significantly
According to Rachman, many of the remaining Vitara models on the market have deviated from their original specifications. He noted that a number of these vehicles have been used for off‑road activities, leading to frequent replacements of original body, engine, and suspension components with parts from other cars.
Under these circumstances, factory‑intact Vitara models are becoming increasingly hard to find. The age of the vehicles and previous owners’ habits mean that there are fewer stock units compared to the Escudo and Sidekick.
Escudo and Sidekick are seen as more complete
Rachman stated that the Escudo and Sidekick tend to retain their condition better because both models feature a 4×2 drivetrain. He noted that these cars are usually used for everyday road driving rather than off‑road purposes.
He mentioned that the Sidekick is now the most sought‑after model because many units remain in standard, well‑maintained condition. Produced between 1995 and 2001, it also boasts the simplest interior among the three, making it generally more affordable.
Meanwhile, the Escudo is said to provide better equipment than the Sidekick. This model includes power windows, electric mirrors, and interior trim with covering and molding.
Differences in character among the three models
Rachman described the Vitara as the most comprehensive model with a 4×4 drivetrain. He emphasized that all three share the same engine base, but variations in equipment and drive system create distinct characters for each model in the classic car market.
These conditions have also impacted the market for used classic Suzuki SUVs. Original Vitara models are becoming rarer, while the Escudo and Sidekick serve as alternatives for collectors and enthusiasts looking for more intact units that are relatively easier to restore to stock condition.
