TASIKMALAYA, Thecuy.com – Thousands of silat practitioners from various regions in East Priangan filled the GOR Sukapura Dadaha, Friday (30/10/2026).
A total of 1,314 athletes participated in the Open Pencak Silat Championship of Tasikmalaya IPSI Cup XI 2026.
This number rose compared to the previous year’s event, which saw around 1,000 athletes take part.
Online sales reached 60 percent, pushing JG Motor to target becoming the leading name across West Java. At the same time, dr. Soekardjo Hospital launched a new ICU unit with 16 beds, promoting the motto “Setulus Hati Kami Melayani”.
The surge in participants signals a positive outlook for the growth of pencak silat in the region.
However, the strong enthusiasm also presents a separate challenge for the Tasikmalaya City Pencak Silat Association (IPSI) to ensure that athlete development does not end when the event ends.
The three‑day championship, held from 30 October to 1 November 2026, was inaugurated directly by the Deputy Mayor of Tasikmalaya, Diky Candra.
The opening ceremony was marked by the striking of a gong, accompanied by a representative from KONI and the Head of Youth and Sports Division of the Tasikmalaya City Disporabudpar, Momon Suryaman.
Diky expressed his appreciation to the Tasikmalaya City IPSI and all committee members for consistently holding the championship, now in its eleventh year.
In his view, pencak silat is not merely a sport that seeks medals and achievements.
Beyond that, pencak silat is a national cultural heritage that must be preserved and developed, especially among the younger generation.

“The Government of Tasikmalaya City fully supports every sports activity that is developmental, competitive, and sustainable,” he said.
“Championships such as the IPSI Cup serve as a strategic platform to discover talented pencak silat athletes who can later bring honor to Tasikmalaya City at the provincial, national, and even international levels,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of Tasikmalaya City IPSI, M Arif Gunawan, noted that the rise in participants this year reflects the high enthusiasm of pencak silat schools in joining the competition.
A total of 1,314 athletes from the Priangan Timur region were fielded to compete across various classes and categories. This figure increased by about 314 participants compared to IPSI Cup X, which was attended by 1,000 athletes.
According to Arif, the championship serves not only as a platform to assess the skills of the silat practitioners but also as a means to increase the experience of young athletes and strengthen ties among pencak silat schools.
“Besides boosting the experience of young silat athletes, this championship also aims to enhance camaraderie among the pencak silat schools in Tasikmalaya City,” he said.
