Thecuy.com – The Federal Reserve maintained its key rate between 3.75% and 4.00% following its most recent policy meeting, though the central bank’s statement still hints at possible future rate increases.
The decision was made by a 10‑to‑2 vote, according to a Reuters report cited on Thursday, October 29, 2026. In its latest statement, the Fed also upgraded its assessment of the U.S. economy, now describing it as expanding at a robust pace.
Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh said inflation could still be brought down to the 2% target without overly squeezing economic growth or pushing up unemployment. He expects the upcoming Q3 GDP report to be released on Thursday (Oct. 29) to show strong investment and consumer spending.
Warsh added that the U.S. economy is likely to grow faster than in the first half of the year. Still, he said the economy is not so overheated that it creates demand‑side inflation pressures needing further tightening.
“The economy is moving in the right direction. Is the economy growing too hot? Is it growing too strong? That’s not the view of most of my colleagues,” Warsh said.
He further noted that productivity changes, including those that occurred before the recent AI boom, could allow the U.S. economy to grow faster without sparking higher inflation. In his view, the goal of monetary policy is not to stifle economic activity to the point of causing job losses.
Warsh also said that higher policy rates are beginning to tighten credit conditions modestly, which could slow business investment and has been cited as a factor in the recent stock‑market weakness. If a market downturn also dampens spending by high‑income households, that could become another source of inflation slowdown.
On the government side, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the administration remains confident that Warsh will strike the right balance between the 2% inflation target and sustaining continued economic growth.
Even though rates were held steady, signals in the Fed’s statement indicate the central bank is keeping its policy options open, meaning the next move will hinge on upcoming inflation data, economic activity, and labor‑market conditions over the coming months.
For market participants, the decision underscores that the Fed does not yet see a compelling reason to ease policy anytime soon. At the same time, the central bank has not fully ruled out additional tightening if price pressures rebound.
