Ubisoft is once again in the spotlight as Beyond Good & Evil 2, one of the longest‑developing game projects in the industry, is still not entering full production, according to reports.
Even though it was first announced in 2008, this sci‑fi adventure game still faces constant concept changes that keep its development dragging on.
A Time Extension report on 22 October 2026, citing a French media investigation by Origami, says the project is still in pre‑production.
At least 250 people are reportedly still working on it at Ubisoft Montpellier. Under these conditions, fans will likely have to wait a long time before they can play the game.
Frequent Concept Shifts Drag Development
One of the main issues with Beyond Good & Evil 2 is the repeated shift in development direction. The game was originally designed as a multiplayer title that let players explore multiple planets together.
However, Ubisoft is now reportedly focusing on a strong single‑player story experience, while co‑op mode is still considered as an extra feature.
These changes also affect the combat system, gameplay mechanics, and the core concept of the game. The development team is said to keep evaluating various aspects to make sure the gaming experience feels engaging and aligns with the project’s vision.
Beyond Good & Evil 2 is a prequel to the original game released in 2003. After being reintroduced with a cinematic trailer in 2017, the game showed some gameplay footage in 2018. Since then, however, information about its development progress has been scarce.
Even though the project is said to still be ongoing, there is no certainty about when full production will begin, let alone when the game will be released. After almost two decades of waiting, fans still have no clear idea of when Ubisoft’s latest adventure will finally come to fruition.
