TASIKMALAYA, Thecuy.com — Something interesting appears in the date palm tree at the Grand Mosque of Tasikmalaya city. The tree seems to bring the atmosphere of Medina to the City of Saints. People can take photos under it. For a moment, it feels like being in the Holy Land.
But don’t hastily imagine that the tree existed when the mosque was first built in 1888.
The date palm arrived much later. The Grand Mosque of Tasikmalaya city was constructed from 1886 to 1888. In its early days, its form was still simple. Its architecture resembled the Grand Mosque of Demak: a wooden building with overlapping roofs.

There were no four towering minarets yet. No golden yellow dome existed. Much less a garden with date palms, which is now one of its attractions.
If the date palm could speak, it might say: I didn’t witness the birth of this mosque.
I arrived after the mosque had changed its appearance. The Grand Mosque underwent several renovations. Records show renovations in 1923, 1973, 1982, and a major renovation from 2000 to 2002, during the tenure of Regent H. Suryana WH in Tasikmalaya.
That final renovation significantly altered the mosque’s appearance. Its cost was said to reach Rp 7.9 billion. The inauguration was carried out by Vice President Hamzah Haz.
The old face changed. A Middle Eastern touch was combined with local Sundanese character. Four towers, each 33 meters tall, stood, a golden yellow dome adorned the building, and the courtyard was arranged into a greener garden.
It was in that garden where ten date palms were planted. Therefore, if anyone links the date palms with the early history of the Grand Mosque, the chronology needs correction. The mosque is indeed more than a century old. The date palms are part of modern landscaping.

The date palm is also mentioned in the Qur’an. Its fruit is known as a source of food, while the tree can survive in hot and dry environments.
There is a symbol of blessing there. There is also an Islamic identity that is intended to be displayed. However, the date palm is not merely a matter of symbolism.
