TASIKMALAYA, Thecuy.com – There are those who entered the newsroom with the intention of becoming journalists. Others came to the newsroom to learn the craft of writing. Still others arrived there searching for the purpose of their life.

Imam Mudofar, S.Hum., fell into that last category. I typically referred to him as Dofar. We reconnected for several conversations lately, which felt like a brief reunion.

It wasn’t a reunion with peers from the same class, but with a former pupil. Please forgive the wording—I used that term because I had once offered him a chance to study at Radar Tasikmalaya.

BPK says Tasikmalaya City’s regional funds are insufficient to settle the 2025 debt! The Lumiland Light Festival sparks conflict, with vendors labeling the Tasikmalaya City Government as the organizer.

Presently, Dofar has entered politics. He holds the position of Secretary of the Golkar Party’s Regional Executive Council in Tasikmalaya Regency, a role entrusted to him. Earlier, he also served as an officer within the West Java Golkar DPD.

The gap between journalism and politics proved to be closer than expected, especially for Dofar. I recall his initial stint at Radar Tasikmalaya. Fresh out of college, he ventured into journalism. His credentials extended beyond a degree; he had a crucial asset for writing—keen insight into problems.

His pieces displayed a lively style. During that period, I, still serving as executive editor, provided him with considerable room to write.

I was reluctant to limit him excessively. Emerging journalists deserve chances—to write and to develop their own perspectives. Dofar stood out for one quality in particular: his critical mindset.

I wasn’t particularly astonished, considering his background. Prior to his journalism career, he was already involved in campus activism. He would protest, voice concerns, and tackle community challenges from a youthful angle that often questioned official answers.

Upon joining the newsroom, that habit endured and found a new purpose. Whereas he once voiced his views through protests, he could now share them via written reports.

The distinction lies in the medium: protests rely on amplified sound, while news depends on precise language.

Of course, journalism demands more than just bold criticism. It requires discipline, precision, and the skill to distinguish fact from opinion. To me, though, a willingness to ask tough questions is a vital starting point.

The decline in Tasikmalaya City’s poverty rate is considered implausible; the Dadaha arrangement is beginning to take shape, especially regarding parking and trading areas.

While at Radar, Dofar encountered colleagues from varied backgrounds. Not every journalist had studied journalism formally; some came with organizational experience, others with academic training, and a few only found their path after stepping into the newsroom.
