Witch Hat Atelier placed at number eight on BookWalker’s manga list for summer 2026, a fact revealed to Anime Corner by a BookWalker spokesperson. Created by Kamome Shirahama, the series also secured the 14th spot in the retailer’s overall catalogue rankings for that period. Moreover, it emerged as the second most popular title in the first half of 2026 according to BookWalker’s sales data. All rankings cited refer to the BookWalker English/Global Store.
Witch Hat Atelier premiered in Kodansha’s seinen magazine Morning Two in July 2016. The English version, published by Kodansha USA, launched in April 2019. The work has garnered global acclaim, highlighted by a Best Seinen prize at the 24th Manga Barcelona Awards, inclusion among the YALSA Top 10 Graphic Novels for Teens, and a Best Manga award at the 2025 Harvey Awards. An anime adaptation was confirmed in April 2022, with its first season airing from April 6 through June 29, 2026.
The rising fame of Witch Hat Atelier has sparked heated debate online. On platform X, commentator ChibiReviews labeled the series a “government psyop,” claiming it serves as a vehicle for UK and UN propaganda on diversity and gender issues. A psyop, short for psychological operation, refers to a coordinated effort by state or military entities to influence target audiences’ thoughts and actions via carefully crafted communications and media. Both the X post and its accompanying YouTube video point to an interview Kamome Shirahama gave to UNESCO as evidence. In that interview, Shirahama-sensei talks about her artistic inspirations, her views on manga creation, the role of women in today’s manga field, and the practice of keeping creators anonymous. Although the UNESCO conversation doesn’t directly cover representation or inclusivity themes in the Witch Hat Atelier series, a later discussion with Anime Corner did raise those subjects.
Rankings alone cannot confirm or refute claims of a psyop, yet Witch Hat Atelier‘s position among BookWalker’s top sellers underscores its strong recent sales performance on the site.
