Thecuy.com – Formula 1 has officially inked a ten‑year partnership with the Rwandan government to host an F1 Grand Prix of Africa beginning in the early 2030s. The landmark announcement was made jointly by the organizers and President Paul Kagame of Rwanda on Tuesday local time.

This strategic move marks the return of the world’s premier automobile racing event to the African continent for the first time since 1993.

Construction of an International‑Standard Circuit in Bugesera

The hosting of the African Grand Prix hinges on the completion of a custom‑designed circuit located in the Bugesera area, about 40 km south of the capital Kigali. The track will be built next to the new Kigali International Airport and will meet FIA Grade 1 standards. Construction of this motorsport facility is slated to finish by the start of the next decade.

The organizers said the new circuit’s design harmonizes with the surrounding natural scenery. The local elevation contours have been optimized to deliver a distinctive, challenging racing experience while offering spectacular views for spectators. Beyond Formula 1 races, the Bugesera circuit will also be available for various other international motorsport events outside the main calendar.

Economic Impact and President Paul Kagame’s Enthusiasm

Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame warmly welcomed the deal and described the arrival of Formula 1 as a historic moment belonging to all Africans. He believes that the return of racing to the continent will inspire young people to become actively involved in the international motorsport industry.

Kagame stressed that the partnership is a long‑term investment in Rwanda’s future economic development. “This ten‑year collaboration is also an investment in Rwanda’s future. The Bugesera circuit, together with the new international airport, will create jobs, skills, tourism and new businesses for our country and region for decades to come,” Kagame said. He added that the government’s commitment extends beyond a weekend’s entertainment. “Our goal has never been just a single race weekend, but lasting benefits for our people,” Kagame continued.

Formula 1’s Commitment and Lewis Hamilton’s Support

Formula 1’s Chief Executive Officer, Stefano Domenicali, expressed delight at the confirmation that the series will return to every inhabited continent. “Today is a historic day for Formula 1. With Rwanda joining the calendar from the next decade, our sport will race on every continent that is home to people,” Domenicali said in an official statement.

Domenicali emphasized that Africa has always been a crucial element of the series’ long‑term global development plan. Management has been committed from the outset to returning to the African continent with the right partner to deliver real, lasting positive impact.

Legendary driver Lewis Hamilton also gave his full backing to the confirmed Grand Prix in Rwanda. “I have always said we need to have a Grand Prix in Africa. It’s the most important and most beautiful continent for me, and there is no reason not to race there,” said Hamilton, who continues to push for the event’s realization.
