Thecuy.com, Lampung Selatan – The Ministry of Public Works (PU) is accelerating measures to counter seawater intrusion in the Pisang Irrigation Area (DIR) of Lampung Selatan Regency, safeguarding roughly 8,000 hectares of farmland from productivity loss. The steps involve improving water flow and securing irrigation water supplies for local farmers to avert potential harvest failures.

Public Works Minister Dody Hanggodo underscored that bolstering water‑resources infrastructure is a vital pillar for sustaining national food production. “The presence of water‑resources infrastructure is crucial to support the availability of agricultural irrigation water, maintain land productivity, and ensure food supplies remain stable,” he stated.

Through the Mesuji Sekampung River Basin Management Board (BBWS), the Ministry of Public Works carried out repairs on a network of canals linked to the Way Sekampung River and the Sragi Secondary Discharge Canal (SPS). Work comprised normalizing a 1.3‑kilometre supply canal from the Way Sekampung River to SPS Sragi and normalizing 3.2 kilometres of SPS Sragi.

Encompassing a total effort of about 4.5 kilometres, the normalization was undertaken to increase capacity and smooth water flow toward the irrigation network. This is expected to provide a more optimal water supply for agricultural needs.

In addition to normalizing the canals, the Ministry of Public Works has also finished repairing four Tabat Gayau sluice gates and thirteen discharge gates. Moreover, three culverts with a combined length of 30 metres have been installed, together with structural reinforcement using stone masonry. These infrastructure actions aim to facilitate water distribution to farming areas and curb seawater intrusion into the canals.

During on‑site implementation, water from the Way Sekampung River was pumped into a roughly 700‑metre canal using a mobile pump. To ensure smooth flow toward agricultural land, the Ministry of Public Works also removed sediment from the Sekampung‑SPS Sragi Primary Drain (SPP) canal, spanning 5.8 kilometres, and from the Sekampung‑Bali Agung SPP canal, covering 5.6 kilometres. The tasks were performed with five Excavator Long Arm units.

Repairing Tabat Gayau is also essential for water management in the area. Tabat functions to regulate canal flow. In the rainy season, the gate can be opened to divert water into the Sekampung River, while in the dry season it is closed to prevent seawater intrusion and keep pumped water flowing in the SPP canal.

Through these coordinated actions, the Ministry of Public Works strives to guarantee that water delivery to agricultural networks remains fluid and under control. The effort is expected to preserve water supplies for paddy fields and help communities maintain agricultural productivity in zones affected by seawater intrusion.
