Oni Press and Magnetic Press have kicked off a Kickstarter fundraiser for A Scoundrel in the New World, a historical adventure graphic novel created by artist Juanjo Guarnido—famous for Blacksad—and writer Alain Ayroles. The Kickstarter campaign is now live.
The tale centers on Don Pablos of Segovia, a con artist and untrustworthy narrator who departs Spain to seek fortune in the Americas during the 17th century. After being imprisoned, Pablos tells inquisitors about his exploits, hoping to reveal secrets of the famed El Dorado treasure. Anime Corner has an exclusive chance to present a sneak peek of the novel:
The graphic novel draws inspiration from Francisco de Quevedo’s 1626 satire Historia de la vida del Buscón, llamado don Pablos, which in English appears as The Life of the Swindler Named Don Pablos. This new installment continues that classic legacy while extending Don Pablos’ adventure into the Spanish overseas territories.
Magnetic Press publishing director Mike Kennedy remarked:
“A Scoundrel in the New World might be Juanjo Guarnido’s most daring project yet, surpassing even his celebrated work on the acclaimed Blacksad series. Each panel reads like a painted masterpiece, brimming with precise historical nuance, vivid characters, and dynamic lighting that brings the era to vivid life. Alain Ayroles’ script pays clever tribute to Spain’s Golden Age of letters, delivering a sharp, cynical narrative that shifts perspectives in a Rashomon‑like fashion, leaving the reader to question the hero’s trustworthiness till the last page. This volume blends Blackadder’s sardonic historical humor with the epic quest for El Dorado.”
Ayroles and Guarnido also released this statement:
“A Scoundrel in the New World is the fruit of a decade of contemplation, pondering and reflection on an extremely compelling storyline. It is deeply important to us as it pays homage to and continues one of the most significant works of the golden century of Spanish literature, as well as the undisputed pinnacle of the picaresque genre: Quevedo’s El Buscón. After a decade concluded by three and a half years of storyboarding, adjusting, drawing, adjusting again, watercoloring, adjusting more (oh yes, after watercoloring!) and fine‑tuning, this intricate production—which we both cherish, even amid our other celebrated achievements—is likely our finest work.”
The Kickstarter drive offers a premium hardcover edition together with a limited collector’s slipcase that includes a textured spine, Smyth‑sewn binding, a satin ribbon bookmark, gold‑foiled page edges and a numbered bookplate.
Before gaining worldwide fame for Blacksad, Guarnido animated at Walt Disney Studios, contributing to movies such as Tarzan and Hercules. Ayroles is celebrated for projects like Garulfo and for crafting historical tales that use layered storytelling and unreliable points of view.
