Thecuy.com, Jakarta – Four suspects linked to a Quran recitation challenge offering alcoholic drinks as prizes at The Sounds Project music festival have been transferred to the Jakarta Northern District Attorney’s Office. The handover was carried out by investigators from the Subdirectorate of Public Order and Security, Directorate of Criminal Investigation, Metro Jaya Police, after the case files were declared complete on 29 September 2026.
The defendants, bearing the initials AK, RE, SM, and IR, are currently incarcerated at two detention facilities: Cipinang Prison and Pondok Bambu Prison. The Chief of Public Relations for the Metro Jaya Police, Police Commissioner Budi Hermanto, indicated that following the second stage of transfer, the public prosecutor will draft an indictment to commence trial proceedings.
The incident began with a viral video on social media depicting a Quran recitation contest during the music festival at Eco Park Ancol, North Jakarta. The footage shows a festival-goer reciting Quranic verses in front of a booth selling alcoholic beverages. According to the investigation, participants who successfully recited Surah Al‑Ikhlas and Surah Ad‑Dhuha were rewarded with a bottle of alcohol.
Moreover, suspect RE, who served as the event’s host, is alleged to have engaged in activities at the booth, while AK and IR are accused of issuing challenges to attendees. SM was observed broadcasting the recitation of Surah Ad‑Dhuha over the event’s sound system. Recordings of the event subsequently spread across social media, prompting a public outcry.
Commissioner Budi called on the public to respect the ongoing legal process and avoid sharing unverified information. He also urged citizens to adhere to the principle of presumption of innocence in relation to this case.
