PANGANDARAN, Thecuy.com – The issue of a sign prohibiting smoking on Pangandaran’s West Beach continues to provoke varied reactions from locals and visitors. Many believe that putting up such a smoking ban sign could affect tourist numbers and overall comfort.
At present, the sign is no longer present, having been removed from its original location, but this has instead sparked numerous questions.
A resident of Wonoharjo Village, Pangandaran Subdistrict, named Hikmat (59), felt that placing a no‑smoking sign in a tourist site was inappropriate. “From an ethical and social standpoint, it certainly is,” he told Radar on Sunday (27/9/2026).

He emphasized that the Pangandaran district government must consider the consequences of putting a no‑smoking sign in a tourist area. Even though the regulation has been approved and is valid, policymakers still need to weigh various factors.
“Tourists come to the beach to enjoy themselves, relax, have coffee, and smoke, so it will clearly have a big impact,” he said.
He noted that if putting up a sign isn’t feasible, the government could enforce the by‑law in other ways. “If we talk about rules, the Smoke‑Free Area by‑law must indeed be enforced, and other by‑laws should be as well, such as the alcohol by‑law,” he remarked.
He said the effects would definitely be felt by tourism operators. “Tourists will definitely be upset, so the impact will hit the tourism sector,” he explained.
A visitor from Bandung, Rohman Nugraha (38), believes that a smoking ban in tourist areas would lower interest in visiting Pangandaran. “Clearly, many tourists are smokers, so it will definitely happen,” he stated.
