As a result, Natsume was often seen as odd and faced unpleasant treatment. His life was troubled not only by people but also by yokai who knew about his power.

Asta is known for his enthusiastic and never-give-up attitude. But looking back at his life, he actually faced major obstacles from the very beginning.
In the world of Black Clover, magic is crucial. The problem is, Asta was born without any magical ability at all.
That forced Asta to work much harder than others. What’s more, he has a rival in Yuno who possesses incredible magic skills.
Later, Asta acquired anti-magic power and used it to chase his dream of becoming the Magic Emperor. His battle goes beyond strength; it’s about proving that someone without magic can still achieve something great.
In love, Asta hasn’t been lucky either. His feelings for Sister Lily have repeatedly gone unanswered.
4. Kousei Arima – Your Lie in April
Kousei Arima was a gifted young pianist who received strict musical training from his mother from a very early age.
The pressure made his relationship with music complicated. After his mother’s death, Kousei suffered emotional distress that left him unable to enjoy playing the piano anymore.
Kousei’s life slowly began to change when he met Kaori Miyazono, a violinist with a different perspective on music.
Kaori helped Kousei find the courage to play the piano again. Sadly, that happiness didn’t last.
It turned out that Kaori had a serious illness. Her passing forced Kousei to face another loss of someone very dear.
5. Shinji Ikari – Neon Genesis Evangelion
Shinji Ikari is one of those anime characters whose life has been filled with heavy pressure.

7. Tooru Ishikawa – Horimiya
Tooru Ishikawa faces a problem similar to Oushi’s. He has a close friendship with Hori and knows her well.
Behind that friendship, Ishikawa actually has deeper feelings for Hori. Sadly, Hori sees him only as a friend.
It gets even trickier when Hori starts dating Miyamura, who is also Ishikawa’s friend.
Even though his love isn’t returned, Ishikawa doesn’t let that push him to hate Miyamura. He keeps their friendship intact.
8. Tsukasa Mizugaki – Plastic Memories
Tsukasa Mizugaki’s story in Plastic Memories has a different kind of tragedy.
Tsukasa works at Terminal Service and partners with Isla, a Giftia android. Over time, their professional relationship grows into deeper feelings.
Unfortunately, Tsukasa learns that Giftia models have a limited operational lifespan. That means their time together from the start was always finite.
As their remaining time dwindles, Tsukasa finally confesses his feelings. Isla, however, keeps her distance because she knows she will soon be deactivated.
Their relationship becomes one of the most touching love stories, as the audience knows from the beginning that their time together can’t last forever.
9. Son Hak – Yona of the Dawn
Son Hak might seem calm and sometimes aloof, but deep down he harbors strong feelings for Yona.
As Yona’s personal bodyguard, Hak always strives to protect the princess from various dangers. When the political situation in the Kingdom of Kouka becomes drastic, Hak even helps Yona escape to keep her safe.
The problem is, Hak has to put his duty above his personal feelings. He knows his role and respects Yona’s choices.
Because he can’t freely express his emotions, Hak becomes one of those characters with both a romantic and tragic side.
10. Yuu Nishinoya – Haikyuu!!
Who says a sad boy character must always have a dark backstory? Yuu Nishinoya from Haikyuu!! proves that unrequited love can also fit the category.
Nishinoya has a crush on Kiyoko Shimizu, Karasuno’s volleyball manager. He openly shows his interest, even though his feelings are repeatedly unrewarded.
What’s interesting is that Nishinoya isn’t the only teammate who likes Kiyoko; Tanaka also has feelings for her.
What makes things even more bitter for Nishinoya is that Tanaka eventually wins Kiyoko’s heart. In later manga chapters, they’re even shown getting married.
