PANGANDARAN, RADSIK – The placement of no‑smoking signs in the West Pangandaran Beach tourism area has drawn public and business attention. The Pangandaran District Health Office promptly responded.
The Acting Head of the Pangandaran District Health Department, Titi Sutiamah, said the installation of no‑smoking signs is part of the government’s effort to educate the public about the dangers of cigarettes, including their impact on those around smokers.
“The Health Department has a duty to provide education and raise public awareness about the hazards and effects of smoking,” she said in a statement on Wednesday (23/9/2026).

According to her, smoking’s effects are not only felt by active smokers but also by those around them due to exposure to cigarette smoke, becoming passive smokers. Vulnerable groups to smoke exposure include children, the elderly, and pregnant women. “Because the impact of cigarettes is not only on the smoker, but also endangers people around them. They become passive smokers, especially children, the elderly, and pregnant women,” she said.
Titi emphasized that the implementation of smoke‑free zones in tourist locations is not solely aimed at imposing penalties on tourists caught smoking.
She said the Pangandaran Regional Government will prioritize an educational approach so that the public understands the purpose of establishing smoke‑free zones.
“In its implementation, since this is a tourist area, we will be wise. So there will be no immediate fine imposed on smokers in the prohibited location,” she said.
Titi hopes that the public will consider the surrounding environment before smoking, especially when near vulnerable groups. “So when someone smokes, they should look around and ensure they are not close to the aforementioned individuals. Because there are impacts from the dangers of cigarettes,” she said.
Titi also urged the public not to focus solely on the sanctions stipulated in the sign. “Do not focus on the fine mentioned on the no‑smoking sign. Do not highlight the fine. Instead, we prioritize education to convey understanding to the public,” she said.
Titi stated that the installation of no‑smoking signs has been coordinated with relevant regional agency organizations (OPD). She mentioned that the placement of signs in tourist areas is carried out together with the Pangandaran District Tourism and Culture Office.
