Thecuy.com, Sumatera Utara – PT Pertamina Gas (Pertagas) conducts coaching for a group of women who produce terasi or belacan in Desa Kelantan, Brandan Barat District, Langkat Regency, North Sumatra. The coaching includes providing new production equipment and packaging assistance to boost the hygiene and brand identity of the terasi products.

The coaching session opened with a forum group discussion (FGD) aimed at uncovering the group’s business needs. Silma Aulya Rahma, Jr. External Relations West Region I of PT Pertamina Gas, said that after grasping the production requirements, Pertigas supplied more hygienic production tools and packaging that serve as a product identifier.

Management and Marketing Challenges

Village head of Kelantan, Muhammad Iqbal, noted that the development of MSMEs in his area still faces obstacles, particularly in management, marketing, and administrative aspects. The village government has coordinated with the Cooperative and MSME Service of Langkat Regency to assist in completing business administration in the village.

Desa Kelantan is a coastal area where most men work as fishermen, contributing to the local economy. The fishermen catch various types of fish, earning around Rp 2 million per week.

Terasi Production and Marketing Process

One of the terasi MSME entrepreneurs, Patimah, said that her group consists of 10 members who can produce around 3 to 3.5 kilograms of terasi daily. The production process takes two days, involving drying and processing.

  • Drying takes one day.
  • After drying, the terasi is salted and processed again the next day.

Once production is finished, the terasi is not sold directly by the group; instead, buyers collect it and then sell it in the market. Terasi packaged in 1‑ounce portions is priced at around Rp 5,000.

Pertagas’ Contribution to MSME Development

The assistance provided by Pertagas, which includes more hygienic production equipment and attractive packaging, plays a crucial role in enhancing product value. With effective branding, the terasi from Desa Kelantan is expected to gain wider recognition and boost the income of the women producers.

This coaching program also forms part of the effort to empower the coastal community’s economy, helping MSMEs advance by improving product quality and marketing strategies.
