The Indonesian horror film Ghost in the Cell, directed by Joko Anwar, has achieved international acclaim following its win for the top Best Picture award in the Horror Competition at Fantastic Fest 2026, held in Austin, Texas, United States.
This honor marks a significant milestone for Indonesian cinema, especially considering that Fantastic Fest is renowned as one of the United States’ premier genre festivals, showcasing horror, thriller, and fantasy films from filmmakers around the world.
The victory was announced just before the film’s scheduled U.S. theatrical release in October 2026, with distribution handled by Well Go USA.

Written and directed by Joko Anwar, the film blends horror, dark comedy, and social critique. Its story centers on the lives of inmates in a prison who confront a mysterious threat when malevolent forces begin terrorizing the prison population.
Beyond festival recognition, Ghost in the Cell has demonstrated global appeal through its international distribution. The film’s screening rights have been sold to 148 countries, reflecting strong worldwide interest in Indonesian horror cinema.
The film features a cast of well‑known actors including Abimana Aryasatya, Aming, Rio Dewanto, Lukman Sardi, Bront Palarae, Tora Sudiro, Morgan Oey, Endy Arfian, and Kiki Narendra.
