GARUT, Thecuy.com – The Garut Police Department uncovered a specialized thief ring that struck numerous convenience stores.

Three suspects were taken into custody, including a juvenile who was personally recruited by his biological father to assist in the crimes.

Garut Police Chief AKBP Niko N. Adiputra disclosed that the arrested individuals bear the initials AR (40), MS (17), and FM (20).

He reported that suspects AR and MS are related by family ties.

“AR is the biological father, while MS is his son who is still a student and underage,” he said on Friday, September 10, 2026.

Niko expressed regret over the father’s act of teaching his child to commit criminal offenses.

“The underage child, still in school, was taught to steal, rob, and even break into convenience stores,” he added.

From preliminary investigations, the gang is believed to have staged crimes at 19 crime scenes, targeting convenience stores considered secure during night patrols and breaching them by damaging the roof to gain entry.

He noted that the stolen items were everyday essentials, ranging from cigarettes to soap.

“The targeted goods included cigarettes, toiletries, and food, which were then carried in makeshift bags,” he said.

To cover their tracks, the group also damaged security facilities at the scenes. “Out of the 19 identified crime scenes, at least 3 had their CCTV cameras deliberately destroyed by the perpetrators,” he revealed.

The Old Market area in Garut will be renovated with street vendors temporarily relocated; meanwhile, street lighting is out on the RTA Prawira Adiningrat route in Tasikmalaya, deemed accident‑prone.

The stolen goods were sold, with the proceeds divided equally among the perpetrators, including FM, who worked with the father.

Because one suspect (MS) is underage, law enforcement processed him under the Child Confrontation Procedure (ABH) guidelines.

They emphasized that the investigation is still ongoing, as there may be additional crime scenes.

“For their actions, the three were charged under Article 477(2) of Law No. 1/2023 on the Criminal Code, carrying a maximum sentence of 9 years’ imprisonment,” he concluded. (Agi Sugiana)
