Thecuy.com, Berastagi – A 16‑year‑old student from SMK Swasta Bersama Berastagi, Febiola Br Purba, lost roughly 70 % of her memory after consuming meals provided by the Free Nutritious Eating (MBG) programme. Laboratory tests on the food she ate revealed three harmful bacteria.

Laboratory analysis identified Bacillus cereus in the rice, Staphylococcus aureus in the fish, sauce and even in a vomit sample, and Escherichia coli (E. coli) in the melon. Salmonella was not detected. Staphylococcus aureus is known to produce a heat‑resistant enterotoxin, meaning that even after cooking kills the bacteria, the toxin remains dangerous and can cause vomiting, diarrhoea and convulsions.

  • Escherichia coli (E. coli) – detected in melon

Bacillus cereus typically proliferates in carbohydrate‑rich foods left at room temperature for extended periods, while E. coli can trigger severe diarrhoea or kidney complications if a toxic strain is involved. The combination of these three bacteria is believed to be the primary cause of Febiola’s MBG poisoning; she is now under intensive care at a hospital and undergoing memory‑rehabilitation therapy.

Febiola’s family says they are struggling to cover the costs of treatment, which include hospitalisation across five facilities, vitamins and special nutrition. The government, via the Ministry for Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection (PPPA), has offered psychological support, but financial aid remains a challenge.

The incident has sparked public concern about the safety of the MBG programme nationwide. The government has pledged to conduct a comprehensive audit of school‑food providers and to raise standards for storage and distribution of nutritious meals to prevent similar occurrences.
