Crunchyroll has been seeking to reinforce its fight against anime piracy since at least July, as it hires a Vice President of Content Protection & Anti-Piracy to “define and lead [its] global strategy” and set the company’s “long‑term vision, operating model, technology roadmap, and strategic partnerships that help us stay ahead of evolving threats while supporting continued business growth.”

Notably, Crunchyroll is recruiting a candidate with practical experience using YouTube Content ID, Meta Rights Manager, and Google’s Trusted Copyright Removal Program (TCRP). The role will manage AI‑driven enforcement actions and forge partnerships with online platforms, host services, domain registrars, CDN providers, payment processors, and sector groups. As a major licensee outside Asia, Crunchyroll’s catalog ranks among the most frequently pirated worldwide.

In related developments, CODA, Japan’s principal anti‑piracy body that includes several large anime and publishing firms, has just signed a Memorandum of Understanding with IP House, an international copyright‑enforcement entity. CODA’s statement highlighted its collaboration with IP House on Operation Animes, a Brazilian enforcement effort that reportedly caused the closure of numerous websites.

IP House’s objectives include promoting legislation for overseas site blocking (report, 2024), a measure that has sparked controversy. Rights owners can obtain swift protection by securing court orders that shut down illegal offshore sites. Yet, because IP address sharing is widespread, many lawful websites have been inadvertently disabled in regions such as Europe, according to a report from the Electronic Freedom Foundation. Fast‑track blocking procedures also spark concerns about reliability, and establishing that a site originates abroad can be contentious—or open to manipulation. Several site‑blocking proposals are now moving through the U.S. Congress; Torrent Freak has covered the developments.
