In a recent chat with Anime Corner at the Los Angeles Kodansha House, the creator of Witch Hat Atelier, Kamome Shirahama, discussed her manga in depth, covering its core themes, cast, and magical system. She also shared where the series stands in its overall timeline as of July 5, 2026, the date of the interview. The complete interview with Kamome Shirahama is available to read.
Shirahama‑sensei indicated that the manga has “completed its world‑building introduction and setup.” The Witch Hat Atelier series has released 98 full chapters (or 164 if partial chapters are counted separately) and has been serialized in Kodansha’s Morning Two since July 2016.
Wrapping up her response, Shirahama‑sensei said, “I think we might be around a third of the way through the story. It’s hard to be precise. We’ve certainly reached a pivotal moment with the Silver Eve arc. While I have the broad outline plotted and decided, the finer details of how the narrative will unfold are still unclear to me. I don’t pre‑plan those specifics; they emerge as I write. So nothing is set in stone, but I constantly consider where the tale will lead.”
Shirahama‑sensei noted that she already called the Silver Eve Festival arc a major turning point back in 2024, pointing out that the overall story direction was mapped out even earlier. In this interview she also touched on how character backstories are crafted, explaining that for the characters “it’s roughly even” between pre‑planned origins and those that develop organically as the plot progresses.
You can access Witch Hat Atelier on K Manga. A second season of the anime was announced last June, accompanied by a teaser trailer.
In another recent interview we organized, Anime Corner conversed with the anime’s Producer Hirotsugu Ogo, Director Ayumu Watanabe, and Coco’s Japanese voice actress Rena Motomura. We learned that the series will grow darker going forward, which is why the first season emphasized many bright moments.
