PANGANDARAN, Thecuy.com – The fracture of the anchor of the Pongpet Suspension Bridge in Margajaya Hamlet, Margacinta Village, Cijulang District, broke on Sunday (30/8/2026) and caused a stir.
A video of the incident is still going viral on social media.
The incident occurred while the bridge was being inaugurated by Pangandaran Regent Citra Pitriyami.
Citra was standing on the bridge when the incident happened. At that time he was accompanied by the Head of Public Works, Ling Ling Nugraha Senjaya, and the Commander of Kodim 0626 Pangandaran, Lieutenant Colonel Czi Citra Kurniawan.
Fortunately, the incident did not result in any fatalities. The Regent and several other regional officials were safe.

However, Citra experienced mild shock. On Monday (31/8/2026), Citra reportedly returned to work as usual.
Based on collected information, the bridge suddenly collapsed while more than 40 people were crossing it, including the Regent, the Commander of Kodim, and the Head of Public Works.
At that time, the Forkopimda group crossed the bridge after the welcoming ceremony for Regent Citra Pitriyami. Suddenly, the right-hand sling rope and the anchor block detached and broke.
The bridge is suspected to have experienced overload when crossed by dozens of people simultaneously. However, the 65-meter-long frame and lower structure of the bridge are confirmed to be still intact.
In his statement, the Commander of Kodim 0625/Pangandaran, Lieutenant Colonel Czi Citra Kurniawan, offered a public apology for the Pongpet bridge fracture incident.
He admitted that the committee had been negligent in not limiting the number of people on the bridge because of the euphoria during the inauguration.
“Indeed, it was our fault from Kodim, during the inauguration we did not monitor the capacity crossing the bridge. Because at that moment there was euphoria between our side and the community, as one of Pangandaran’s tourist destinations reopened,” he told reporters on Monday (31/8/2026).

The Commander of Kodim ensured that there were no fatalities in the incident. Several individuals from Kodim, the regional government, and the community who fell only suffered minor injuries and have received prompt medical attention.
Based on technical specifications, the bridge was designed with a maximum load capacity of 2 tons, with safe usage recommended at around 60 percent of capacity.
“The organizers had previously installed warning signs at both ends of the bridge limiting a maximum of three pedestrians or one motorcycle at a time in alternation. However, during the inauguration ceremony, it is estimated that more than 40 people boarded the bridge simultaneously,” he explained.
