Thecuy.com, Berlin – Union Berlin managed to secure a dramatic 3‑3 draw against Eintracht Frankfurt in the opening match of the 2026/2027 Bundesliga season. The encounter at Stadion An der Alten Försterei highlighted several noteworthy episodes, ranging from the debut of new head coach Mauro Lustrinelli to an unforeseen refereeing substitution.
Union Berlin started the game strongly with a rapid goal by Emmanuel Latte Lath in the third minute, marking his first Bundesliga tally. Eintracht Frankfurt, however, responded swiftly with two quick strikes from Younes Ebnoutalib in the 10th and 11th minutes, capitalising on critical errors by Union Berlin’s players, including a mistake in the initial kick and a blunder from Leopold Querfeld.
The contest took an intriguing turn when referee Bastian Dankert had to alter the officiating crew after one of his assistants, René Rohde, suffered a hamstring injury and was forced off the field. This led to a six‑minute pause that disrupted the match’s flow.
During the second half, Eintracht Frankfurt asserted greater control and extended their lead with a third goal from Younes Ebnoutalib in the 67th minute, following a rapid counter‑attack. Nevertheless, Union Berlin refused to yield and netted two replies, including an equaliser by Tim Skarke in the 92nd minute of added time, levelling the score at 3‑3.
Mauro Lustrinelli’s debut as Union’s manager reflected a bold tactical shift, yet his side continued to rely on set‑piece strengths, which proved decisive in securing the quick goal. Noah Atubolu’s performance in goal for Eintracht also garnered praise, especially considering it was his first match with the club.
The stalemate underscores the fierce competition in this Bundesliga campaign, with both clubs displaying high quality and determination. Union Berlin remain unbeaten in their opening Bundesliga fixtures for six successive seasons, while Eintracht Frankfurt stays a formidable force with their potent attacking capabilities.
Following this outcome, both teams open the season on equal points, hinting that the Bundesliga battle will be intense and full of surprises.
