Thecuy.com – The Malaysian national team kicked off their AFF 2026 campaign with a crucial win against hosts Myanmar in the Group B opener at Thuwunna Stadium, Yangon, on Saturday (25/7/2026).
Malaysia fell behind early as Myanmar took the lead in the 10th minute through a quick strike by Myat Kaung Khant. The Harimau Malaya responded in the second half, thanks to an outstanding performance from Paulo Josue, who netted two goals within five minutes, including a penalty, turning the tide to a 2‑1 victory for Malaysia.
Malaysia’s interim coach, Tan Cheng Hoe, handed debuts to players such as Rodney Celvin Akwensivie, G. Pavithran and Alif Ahmad. Although they struggled to create chances in the first half, the team gained control after the interval, dominating possession and generating several clear opportunities.
Malaysia’s equalizer came from a powerful shot by Paulo Josue in the 52nd minute, capitalising on a scramble in front of Myanmar’s goal. Five minutes later, Josue struck again from the penalty spot after Mohamadou Sumareh was fouled in the box. These goals proved pivotal for Malaysia’s comeback win.
Meanwhile, Myanmar, who pressed aggressively from the start, almost doubled their lead before halftime with several attempts that rattled the post. Despite the loss, the hosts displayed fierce resistance and swift counter‑attacks that troubled Malaysia’s defence.
The victory provides Malaysia with valuable momentum in the Group B AFF 2026 tournament, while Myanmar must quickly adjust their tactics for the next match.
In other Group B action, Thailand recorded a 5‑0 triumph over Laos, marking a strong start for both sides in the competition.
Malaysia’s success was largely due to the contributions of two naturalised players, Paulo Josue and Mohamadou Sumareh, who were instrumental in turning the game around and securing the full three points for the Harimau Malaya.
Following this result, Malaysia has demonstrated strong adaptability and fighting spirit under away‑day pressure, while also enhancing their chances of progressing to the next round in this prestigious regional tournament.
