Thecuy.com, Nepal – A flash flood that struck the Nepal‑Tibet border region has caused extensive damage, leaving hundreds missing and at least 469 people dead. The incident followed a glacier landslide that triggered a devastating flood and mudslide in Rasuwa district, Nepal, last Wednesday.

The suddenness and force of the water left many villagers and townspeople unable to escape. A nurse and chairman of the Nepal Non‑Resident Association in the UK, Rajendra Pudasaini, said his wife’s family was among those swept away by the flood. “My wife’s family, including my aunt, uncle, their grandchild and husband, and my godchild, are all missing,” he said. He described the villages along the river as if they had been wiped out by the flood.

More than 30 British nationals are among the hundreds missing and presumed dead. The British government, through Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband, has activated a crisis centre and allocated an initial £5 million to aid disaster relief in Nepal.

The situation worsened when Nepali police issued an emergency warning after a dam in Tibet ruptured, heightening the risk of further flooding. Residents and rescuers in the Bhotekoshi area were ordered to move to safer grounds immediately. Authorities also cautioned that a barrier lake forming at the confluence of the Tsogyal and Purupqiangzangbu rivers was swelling and could burst.

According to official data from Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), 469 people have died, 977 remain unaccounted for, and more than 3,000 have been rescued. Severe infrastructure damage occurred, including a destroyed bridge and roughly 40 kilometres of road rendered unusable, cutting off access to several affected areas.

Casualties were not limited to locals; foreign tourists also fell victim. Two Irish nationals, Santosh Sahu (46) and Spandan Sahu (18), were reported missing while on a pilgrimage with a group at Gosainkunda Lake, a sacred site in Nepal’s Langtang National Park. The number of missing foreign tourists stands at over 540, the majority of whom were on trekking trails and popular pilgrimage routes.

Search and rescue operations have employed helicopters, heavy machinery, and detection dogs. However, the work was temporarily halted due to the threat of new flooding caused by rising water levels in the barrier lake. Officials and locals have been urged to stay alert and be prepared to evacuate promptly should the situation deteriorate.

The disaster has generated significant social and economic repercussions for Nepal, a nation particularly susceptible to climate change and natural calamities. The government and the global community continue to monitor developments and are striving to provide humanitarian assistance and rebuild the stricken infrastructure.

With conditions still unstable and the threat of further floods looming, the primary focus now is on safeguarding lives and rescuing those still trapped in remote areas. The public is advised to adhere to official directives and steer clear of flood‑prone zones throughout the emergency response period.
