Thecuy.com – FKG UI, the Dental Faculty of Universitas Indonesia, is one of the oldest and most prestigious dental education institutions in Indonesia. Its establishment was driven by concerns over the scarcity of dentists in the late 1950s, when the ratio of dentists to Indonesia’s population was only 1:200,000, with just two dental schools in the country. This situation prompted Prof. Dr. Ouw Eng Liang and his colleagues from the Dentistry and Oral Department at FKUI to propose the creation of FKG UI in 1959. The proposal was realized through the Decree of the Minister of Education, Teaching, and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia No. 108049 dated December 21, 1960, making FKG UI the fourth public dental faculty in Indonesia, with Prof. Dr. Ouw Eng Liang as its first dean. The inaugural class consisted of 71 students.
Currently, FKG UI is located on the UI Salemba Campus in Central Jakarta and offers a full range of educational programs: Bachelor of Dental Medicine (S1), Dental Professional Program, Specialist (Sp-1), Master, and Doctoral degrees. Student clinical education is supported by the Special Dental and Oral Hospital (RSKGM) of FKG UI and a network of teaching hospitals, enabling graduates to handle real cases from the internship period onward. With a strong academic reputation, active dental research, and an extensive alumni network in both government and private practice sectors, FKG UI remains a top choice for prospective dental students through SNBP, SNBT, and UI Independent Selection.
