Fantagraphics Launches Takumigraphics Imprint With Yudori’s Lovers of the Empire

Fantagraphics is debuting Takumigraphics, a fresh imprint focused on East Asian comics, launching with Yudori’s Lovers of the Empire Volume 1. The 224‑page, full‑color hardcover hit the shelves on August 18.

The new series is created by the South Korean artist known for Raging Clouds and is slated to be a three‑part story. Set in 1920s Korea under Japanese rule, Lovers of the Empire centers on two youths from contrasting social classes, blending romance with explorations of class tension, colonialism, and cultural upheaval.

Arisa Jo, the daughter of a prosperous merchant in Gyeongsung (the Japanese‑era name for Seoul), embraces Western styles and modern ideas. Her father arranges for Jun Seomoon, a conservative countryside youth, to accompany her to the city, and the two, despite clashing personalities, grow into a romance amid the turbulent political and social changes of the era.

Takumigraphics will function as Fantagraphics’ specialized imprint for manga, manhwa, manhua, and other East Asian comics. Associate publisher Eric Reynolds notes that the line aims to consolidate the publisher’s expanding catalog of works from Japan, South Korea, China, and other regional sources into one unified brand.
