W.R. Supratman was a journalist and musician. He composed Indonesia Raya to inspire the people’s spirit; the composition process took place around 1926. He persistently attempted to introduce and record his work for the public, including several recording companies in Batavia.

Nevertheless, not all companies approached were willing to record the song. This was because the underground movement carried out by Indonesian youths and maidens was discovered by the Dutch.

During the Second Youth Congress held in Batavia on October 28, 1928, later commemorated as Youth Pledge Day, Supratman was given the opportunity to perform his composition for the congress participants. Given that the political situation was still under Dutch colonial rule, the song was performed using a violin without singing its lyrics.

In addition to its history, there are several interesting facts that make Indonesia Raya even more special. Come on, let’s take a look, Thecuy!

1. Memiliki Tiga Stanza

The version of Indonesia Raya commonly performed during flag-raising ceremonies uses only the first stanza. However, the original song consists of three stanzas that fully express national ideals. Its lyrics contain profound prayers for the glory of the homeland, the sea, the soul, and all Indonesian people.

Stanza I

Indonesia, tanah airku

Tanah tumpah darahku

Di sanalah aku berdiri

Jadi pandu ibuku

Indonesia, kebangsaanku

Bangsa dan tanah airku

Marilah kita berseru

Indonesia bersatu

Hiduplah tanahku

Hiduplah negeriku

Bangsaku, rakyatku, semuanya

Bangunlah jiwanya

Bangunlah badannya

Untuk Indonesia Raya.

Indonesia Raya, merdeka! Merdeka

Tanahku, negeriku yang kucinta

Indonesia Raya, merdeka! Merdeka

Hiduplah Indonesia Raya

Stanza II

Indonesia, tanah yang mulia

Tanah kita yang kaya

Di sanalah aku berdiri

Untuk selama-lamanya

Indonesia, tanah pusaka

Pusaka kita semuanya

Marilah kita mendoa

Indonesia bahagia

Suburlah tanahnya

Suburlah jiwanya

Bangsanya, rakyatnya, semuanya

Sadarlah hatinya

Sadarlah budinya

Untuk Indonesia Raya.

Indonesia Raya, merdeka! Merdeka

Tanahku, negeriku yang kucinta

Indonesia Raya, merdeka! Merdeka

Hiduplah Indonesia Raya

Stanza III

Indonesia, tanah yang suci

Tanah kita yang sakti

Di sanalah aku berdiri

Menjaga ibu sejati

Indonesia, tanah berseri

Tanah yang aku sayangi

Marilah kita berjanji

Indonesia abadi

Selamatlah rakyatnya

Selamatlah putranya

Pulaunya, lautnya, semuanya

Majulah negerinya

Majulah pandunya

Untuk Indonesia Raya.

Indonesia Raya, merdeka! Merdeka

Tanahku, negeriku yang kucinta

Indonesia Raya, merdeka! Merdeka

Hiduplah Indonesia Raya

2. Mengalami Revisi Era Pendudukan Jepang

In 1944, a National Song Committee was formed to refine the lyrics, melody, and presentation procedures. The committee was chaired by Soekarno.

Although several alterations were made, the revision preserved the original structure, essence, and primary spirit of W.R. Supratman’s work. Thus, despite the improvements, Indonesia Raya remains a creation of W.R. Supratman.

3. Biola W.R. Supratman menjadi benda bersejarah

W.R. Supratman’s violin is a historic object that continues to be preserved. The instrument was also played again during a cultural event by violinist Sigit “Didiet” Arditya.

W.R. Supratman was awarded the title of National Hero and the Bintang Mahaputra Utama award by the Government of the Republic of Indonesia in 1961 for his great services.

4. Bukan sekedar lagu seremonial

Indonesia Raya occupies a position as a symbol of national identity and unity. The government has even regulated its usage and the manner of listening to or singing it through legislation.

Playing or listening to the national anthem Indonesia Raya every morning at 10:00 has become a nationalist movement. When the song resounds, all citizens are encouraged to stand upright with a respectful attitude.
