Digimon IP Reaches Record Profit, Surpassing Peak of Original Anime Era

The Digimon franchise has hit an all‑time revenue high, eclipsing its prior record set during the 2000 anime surge.

The news stems from a conversation with Bandai Namco Entertainment President Nao Udagawa featured in the August 20‑27, 2026 edition of Weekly Famitsu. Udagawa says the franchise’s profitability hit a new benchmark, driven by strong sales across its video games and collectible card games—chief among them Digimon Story: Time Stranger. He did not reveal exact financial numbers or the exact timeframe.

Digimon Story: Time Stranger is credited with the franchise’s surge. The role‑playing game sold over one million copies globally—including digital orders—within about two months after its October 2025 release, making it the quickest‑selling entry in the Digimon Story lineup. Udagawa highlighted the upcoming July 2026 launch on Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch, plus a substantial 2027 expansion, noting he sees further upside potential.

Digimon Adventure is a 1999 Japanese animated series created by Toei Animation in partnership with WiZ, Bandai and Fuji Television. It launched the Digimon media franchise as the inaugural anime adaptation of the 1997 Digital Monster virtual pet. The property has spawned many other shows and spin‑offs and will mark its 30th anniversary in 2027.

In preparation for the 30th anniversary, Bandai Namco is already broadening the franchise. Recent plans feature a freshly announced TV anime slated for a 2027 debut, plus Digimon: Our Best Adventure—a fan‑voted compilation of episodes from the first four Digimon animated series that will start broadcasting in Japan this coming October.
