Tsurumaru Tsuyoshi, Retired Racehorse and Umamusume Character Inspiration Has Died

Tsurumaru Tsuyoshi, the thoroughbred that served as the model for the Umamusume: Pretty Derby character, passed away on August 2 at the age of 31.

Shigeo Nakanishi, a board member of the Tsurumaru Tsuyoshi Association, posted the announcement on the organization’s site. Although the exact cause was not disclosed, Nakanishi noted that Tsurumaru was discovered unable to rise in his pasture. After a vet was summoned and treatment proved futile, the farm opted to euthanize the animal.

The Umamusume series’ Japanese and English official accounts both honored the late horse.

This horse entered the world on April 6, 1995, at Symboli Farm, born to Symboli Rudolf and Sweet Cielo. He belonged to Japan’s so‑called Golden Generation—horses foaled in 1995 who raced in 1998. Among his notable victories were the Grade 3 Asashi Challenge Cup and the Grade 2 Kyoto Daishoten, where he defeated top contenders like Special Week and T.M. Opera O. His career ledger shows five wins in eleven starts.

A combination of a frail build, an osteochondroma diagnosis and a ruptured suspensory ligament in his left foreleg led to his retirement from competition.

After hanging up his racing gear, Tsurumaru worked as a lead horse for a short time, yet lingering health problems eventually ended that stint. The game Umamusume: Pretty Derby incorporates his medical challenges into the character modeled after him. The voice of Tsurumaru in the series belongs to Yoshino Aoyama.
