Bones president and producer Masahiko Minami has revealed what convinced the studio to adapt MARRIAGETOXIN, noting that the manga’s unique characters and unconventional action style set it apart from other series.
Speaking during the MARRIAGETOXIN panel at Otakon 2026 with voice actor Ryotaro Okiayu, Minami said his initial reaction to the manga was that it presented a chance to experiment with a fresh narrative approach.
“When I first read the original manga, the factor that drove me to adapt it into an anime was the feeling that it gave us an opening to try a novel form of storytelling, distinct from standard action series. Still, the real draw of this work is its characters.”
He went on to say that the dynamic between the cast’s varied members—such as assassins and con artists—and the emotional connections they develop is what makes the narrative especially gripping.
Okiayu, who provides the narrator’s voice as well as that of Teacher, also shared what attracted him to the series.
“It may appear to be a drama, but the anime truly charms with its humor. It also showcases many cute moments and blends laughs, battles, and other elements. I feel it’s a series that can be loved by viewers of all ages.”
Both participants also highlighted their preferred episodes from Season 1. Okiayu praised the “Hamster Master” scene in Episode 8, and Minami highlighted the “Animal Appreciation Festival” moment in Episode 13, prompting a warm response from the audience.
Okiayu noted that this project was his debut as an anime narrator, describing his method as that of a storyteller while giving Teacher a deliberately vague and enigmatic vocal style.
The session ended by informing fans that a second season of MARRIAGETOXIN will launch worldwide in January 2027. This announcement came after the completion of the first season, which consisted of 13 episodes spanning the Water Master, Sound Master, and Beast Master story arcs.
Studio BONES Film oversaw the animation, and Crunchyroll streamed the series globally.
The series is helmed by director Motonobu Hori, acclaimed for Carole & Tuesday and Metallic Rogue. He collaborates with Kohei Tokuoka, who takes on the roles of Chief Animation Director and Character Designer, with previous credits on SK8 the Infinity and The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity. Studio BONES Film has a track record of popular titles such as My Hero Academia FINAL SEASON and Gachiakuta.
