GARUT, Thecuy.com – The Transportation Agency of Garut Regency has issued a strong warning to the public not to use open‑bed vehicles (pick‑ups) for transporting passengers.

The agency has stepped up supervision of pick‑up or open‑bed vehicle usage to prevent them from being used for passenger transport because of the high risk in case of an accident.

The Head of the Garut Regency Transportation Department, Satria Budi, emphasized that, according to regulations and technical functions, pick‑up or open‑bed vehicles are specifically intended for freight transport, not for people.

The new Garut Market area will be renovated, with temporary relocation of street vendors. Street lighting is dead, making the RTA Prawira Adiningrat Tasikmalaya route considered accident‑prone.

“Itu bukan peruntukannya. Sedangkan kalau bak mah untuk angkut barang,” ucapnya, Minggu 26 July 2026.

He said the increased supervision of open‑bed vehicles was a follow‑up to several fatal accidents that occurred in various regions, one of which recently happened in Indramayu.

In addition, the agency still frequently observes some residents using open‑bed vehicles to transport groups or carry passengers.

The agency urges the public to stop forcing the use of vehicles that are not intended for that purpose.

“Our advisory states that open‑bed vehicles not designed for passenger transport should not be used to carry people,” he said.

He explained that the Garut Regency Transportation Agency currently only issues advisories. Meanwhile, strict actions such as issuing tickets fall under the authority of the police.

Satria said that vehicles misused on the highway fall under the Traffic Law, and his agency will therefore coordinate with the police to increase supervision of pick‑up vehicles.

Satria Budi added that the agency has consistently provided education to drivers regarding the dangers of using open‑bed vehicles for passenger transport.

“We have been continuously educating vehicle owners not to push their limits, because it can endanger passenger safety,” he said.

He hopes that pick‑up vehicle owners operating in Garut will comply with traffic regulations for mutual comfort, security, and safety.

He also reminded pick‑up drivers not to overload cargo, which could endanger road users.

“If a KIR test later reveals that the vehicle does not comply with the manufacturer’s specifications, it will be penalized and prohibited from operating because it does not meet the regulations,” he said.
