Thecuy.com, Jakarta – Bakti Budaya Djarum Foundation presents another cinematic work to mark National Kebaya Day. Following two previous films that raised awareness of kebaya, this year they release a short film titled Jalan Pulang. The story focuses on a personal mother‑and‑child relationship as a way to understand kebaya. The film will have its premiere on 24 July 2026 on the Indonesia Kaya YouTube channel.

Kebaya As a Path Home to Family Memories

Program Director of Bakti Budaya Djarum Foundation, Renitasari Adrian, said that the film concept originated after analyzing previous campaign results. Earlier productions not only raised interest in kebaya but also stimulated sales for vintage kebaya vendors and small‑to‑medium enterprises. “We observed a significant economic impact… each kebaya carries a story,” she remarked during a press gathering at Plaza Indonesia, Jakarta.

The third production adopts a more personal style. Renitasari noted that numerous women initially learned about kebaya from their mothers. “Our encounter as women with kebaya is linked, introduced by our mothers during our childhood. Kebaya has become part of our daily attire, although we often forget. Hence, the bond between mother and child, the concept of home, and the invitation to return become the foundation of the film’s narrative,” she added.

The Message Behind the Title “Jalan Pulang”

Filmmaker Bramsky explained that the title Jalan Pulang was selected due to kebaya’s ability to reconnect individuals with memories and relatives. “Returning isn’t just yearning for a person. Kebaya also carries history, affection, and life experiences. That’s our intent—to show that kebaya can serve as a route back home,” Bramsky stated.

Cast and Actors’ Expectations

The cast includes Sheila Dara Aisha, Widyawati, Asri Welas, and Sharon Shitania. Sheila Dara noted that she was instantly attracted to her part due to its relatable emotional arc. “The character’s evolution from viewing kebaya as just a job to uncovering its profound significance—both the garment itself and its ties to family—felt deeply human to me,” she remarked.

Widyawati, who learned about kebaya from her mother early in life, stressed that kebaya is a vital element of Indonesian women’s identity that deserves continual protection. Asri Welas, on the other hand, desires the film to alter younger generations’ view that kebaya is outdated. “Kebaya isn’t about being old; it’s about being contemporary. In fact, kebaya defines us as Indonesian women,” Asri declared.

Sharon Shitania added, “Cultural heritage doesn’t always come from large objects. Kebaya is something very near to us. This film serves as an invitation for us to know it first, because once we understand, we’ll feel proud to wear it.”

Economic and Cultural Impact

Renitasari wants the film to not just foster public connection with kebaya, but also to underline that donning kebaya supports those in the creative sector. “The deeper our appreciation for kebaya, the broader its adoption. Kebaya needs to thrive and provide livelihoods. By wearing it, we assist the tailor, the cloth vendor, the button craftsperson, and others,” she concluded.

The short film Jalan Pulang will debut on July 24, 2026 on the Indonesia Kaya YouTube channel. Beyond offering a heartfelt family narrative, the production encourages audiences to regard kebaya as an inheritable cultural treasure that merits conservation and everyday use.
