The sad news was conveyed by the Public Relations officer of the Indonesian Film Artists Association (PARFI), Evry Joe. Imam Tantowi’s body is currently lying in state at a funeral home in Karawaci, Tangerang, Banten.

Imam Tantowi’s Career Journey

Born in Tegal on 13 August 1946, Imam Tantowi began his artistic career on the theatre stage in the 1960s. In the 1970s he entered the Indonesian film industry, contributing as an art director, scriptwriter and director.

At the 1991 FFI he again received the Citra Award for Best Director through the film Soerabaia 45. These accolades cemented Imam Tantowi’s position as one of the important filmmakers in the history of the national film industry.

Aside from big‑screen movies, Imam Tantowi also had a career in the soap‑opera world. He earned the award for Best Original Story Writer at the Indonesian Soap‑Opera Festival for three consecutive years: 1994, 1995 and 1996. His soap‑opera works include Madu Racun, Anak Singkong, Jejak Sang Guru and Suami‑Suami Takut Istri. He is also known as a story writer for the soap operas Bang Jagur and Maha Kasih, one of whose famous episodes is titled Tukang Bubur Naik Haji.
