‎TASIKMALAYA, Thecuy.com – The Tasikmalaya City Government collaborates with the Indonesian University of Education (UPI) and Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Malaysia in the development of environment‑based creative batik industry.

‎The collaboration was discussed during an event at the PPIK Complex Building, Jalan Letjen Mashudi, on Monday (22/7/2026). At that time, the results of batik engineering using sustainable or lasting materials were also introduced.

‎Tasikmalaya Mayor Viman Alfarizi said that the cooperation originated from a collaboration between the Tasikmalaya City Government and UPI, which then involved a research team from UiTM Malaysia.

‎”This research focuses on batik engineering, where the materials used are sustainable or lasting. It can protect our environment, not synthetic,” said Viman.

‎According to him, the sustainability concept is applied from the material, fabric, and dyeing stages. The research results were then realized in Tasikmalaya city batik motifs that use environmentally friendly and recycled materials.

‎Viman considers that the development of batik cannot be seen only from a historical and cultural perspective. Moreover, batik also has great potential to be developed as a creative industry force capable of boosting the community’s economy.

‎”This is one of our efforts to develop batik not only from a historical perspective but also from an industrial and economic perspective,” he said.

‎Besides discussing batik development, the meeting also opened up broader cooperation opportunities between Tasikmalaya and Malaysia. One of them is the possibility of establishing a Sister City relationship with a city in Malaysia.

‎The Tasikmalaya City Government also promotes a pentahelix collaboration involving government and university elements. Cooperation between the Tasikmalaya City Government, UPI, and UiTM is expected to continue beyond research to the implementation stage, providing direct benefits to the community.

‎”What’s certain is that it must have an impact in the future,” Viman asserted.

‎He added that future cooperation opportunities could also be directed toward student exchanges. However, the main focus now is how batik can provide economic impact while preserving the environment.
