TASIKMALAYA, Thecuy.com – A fire that hit SDN Citapen in Tasikmalaya City on Tuesday evening (21/7/2026) is not just an incident that disrupts learning activities.

The incident, believed to have been triggered by an electrical short circuit, has now become a wake‑up call for the Tasikmalaya City Government to review the condition of electrical installations in ageing schools.

Mayor of Tasikmalaya Viman Alfarizi Ramadhan, who inspected the fire site directly, confirmed that emergency response was swift.

He praised the response of the fire brigade from Tasikmalaya City and District, who arrived within the minimum service standard (SPM).

“The fire brigade’s response was excellent. It took about 10 minutes to arrive at the scene, still under the 15‑minute SPM,” said Viman.

According to him, the first step is to expedite repairs to the affected buildings using the Unexpected Expenditure (BTT) budget.

He stressed that the rehabilitation process must not drag on so that students’ learning activities are not disturbed at the start of the new school year.

“Let’s not let the repair process take too long and disrupt learning activities. The children are enthusiastic about starting the new school year,” he said.

However, the government’s concern does not stop at SDN Citapen. Viman asked that all schools, especially public elementary and junior high schools in Tasikmalaya City, undergo a thorough inspection of mechanical and electrical installations in the buildings.

He said that many school buildings were decades old and therefore potentially had a decline in the quality of electrical installations if not subjected to regular inspections.

“We must make sure that the mechanical electrical systems in schools are still adequate. Let’s avoid any potential short circuits that could trigger a fire such as the one that happened at SDN Citapen,” he said.

In addition to auditing the electrical installations, Viman also asked the Tasikmalaya City BPBD to expand disaster preparedness education programmes to all schools.

Such socialisation was deemed important so that teachers and students understand self‑rescue steps when faced with an emergency.

“Children and teachers should not panic when a fire or other disaster occurs. That is why they must know what to do through emergency response socialisation,” he said.

He added that disaster mitigation must be carried out from both sides simultaneously, namely ensuring that human resources are ready to face emergencies and ensuring that buildings are safe from potential disasters.
