Thecuy.com – The National Disaster Management Authority (BNPB) reported that the count of hot spots from forest and land fires (karhutla) in South Papua has been decreasing following the execution of weather modification operations (OMC). Efforts are concentrated in four regencies: Merauke, Boven Digoel, Mappi, and Asmat.

The Acting Head of the Data, Information, and Communication Centre for Disaster Management at BNPB, Berton Panjaitan, stated that the total area scorched in the region amounts to 161.5 hectares. The government has carried out 10 sorties of OMC by seeding 10,000 kilograms of salt to induce rainfall across several areas in South Papua.

Hujan mulai turun di sejumlah wilayah

BNPB indicated that the operation triggered rainfall in the northern and central sections of Merauke, the southern part of Boven Digoel, and the southern region of Mappi. Consequently, the number of hot spots dropped markedly from 295 spots on Tuesday (27/10) to 65 spots on Wednesday (28/10).

“We can now report that the fire spots have decreased significantly by 78 percent compared to previous days. Initially there were 295 spots, now we have observed 65 spots,” said Berton on Thursday (29/10).

BNPB also noted that the rainfall in South Papua was fairly uniform, enhancing visibility from 1–5 kilometers to 7–8 kilometers. This situation is expected to continue improving as the potential for rain cloud development rises, especially in the southern part of Merauke, over the weekend.

Asmat belum terpantau hujan

Nevertheless, BNPB reported that no precipitation has been observed in one of the districts, Asmat. Therefore, the government will continue to enhance OMC efforts to make the handling of karhutla in South Papua more effective.

“We will certainly maintain our firefighting efforts so that South Papua will eventually be free from fire,” stated Berton.

Beyond South Papua, BNPB also revealed that the government is still addressing a total of 462 hectares of burnt land across 10 affected provinces. Some of these include East Kalimantan, Central Sulawesi, and Maluku.

On Wednesday (28/10), the government also deployed 16 OMC sorties by dispersing dry ice and salt totalling 22,600 kilograms across three provinces: Central Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, and South Sumatra. This initiative reportedly generated light to moderate rainfall in several impacted areas, such as West Kotawaringin, Banjarmasin, and Banjarbaru.
