Forest and land fires (karhutla) still raging across many parts of Indonesia keep claiming victims. Acute respiratory infection (ISPA) cases are on the rise due to daily exposure to smoke. Meanwhile, officers and volunteers are risking their lives to extinguish the flames.

In Barito Kuala Regency, South Kalimantan (Kalsel), a volunteer passed away while battling a forest fire (karhutla), specifically behind the Handil Bakti sub-district office. His name was Nurdin. Shortly before his death, he complained of chest pain to a colleague. Citing CNN Indonesia from detikKalimantan, his colleague Amat recounted on Wednesday (21/10/2026), “He complained of chest pain, then I told him to rest. While receiving oxygen, he kept saying his chest hurt.”

Even after receiving oxygen from a tank, Nurdin still struggled to breathe. His colleagues rushed him to the nearest hospital using a BPK vehicle because an ambulance had not arrived yet. During the trip, he complained of chest pain, lost consciousness briefly, and had convulsions.

“He grabbed my arm and said his chest hurt. I kept trying to wake him up. Not long after, we arrived at the hospital, but he was declared dead,” Amat recounted.

“The smoke was thick; he was only wearing a regular mask. We still can’t believe he’s gone; we’re all in shock,” he said.
