Thecuy.com – Gunung Anak Krakatau (GAK) erupted again Friday afternoon, October 9, 2026. Officials logged two bursts, at 16.17 WIB and 16.30 WIB. Suwarno, who leads the monitoring post for Gunung Anak Krakatau, validated the event.

“The initial eruption sent its ash plume up to about 250 metres above the crater, equivalent to 407 metres above sea level. The plume looked grey, brown and black, dense and drifting northward and north‑westward,” he commented.

During the subsequent explosion the ash column rose to roughly 150 metres above the summit—about 307 metres above sea level. “It was lighter than the first. The ash was grey, brown and black, heavy, and spread toward the north, northeast and west. The seismograph logged the second event with a maximum amplitude of 56 mm over a 36‑second interval,” he noted.

Future eruptions, Suwarno explained, will depend on how much volcanic energy is discharged. He added that his team is constantly watching a range of signals—including shallow and deep volcanic quakes and tremors—to track the volcano’s behavior in the Sunda Strait waters. Observations are gathered via existing instruments and visual checks using surveillance cameras or CCTV.

The volcano is presently holding Alert Level II. The Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG) calls on all parties to respect the established safety zone. “People, visitors, tourists and trekkers must not go near Gunung Anak Krakatau or carry out any actions inside a 2‑km radius of the active vent,” PVMBG warned.
