Synopsis of Empat Musim Pertiwi
After 20 years away, Pertiwi finally returns to the hometown where she was born and raised. However, this homecoming is not easy. There are wounds and past memories that make it difficult for her to go back to her family home.
Pertiwi’s father and mother still welcome their daughter’s return, though the atmosphere feels awkward. The last time they saw her off, she was still 16 years old. Now, after two decades, many things have changed, including Pertiwi’s relationship with her hometown.
News of Pertiwi’s return quickly spreads throughout the village. The news also reaches Bisma, Pertiwi’s former lover who now has a family. Their reunion revives memories of past love. Bisma tries to get close to Pertiwi, but she is not interested in rekindling their relationship.
Instead of dealing with her past with Bisma, Pertiwi chooses to walk through the village she hasn’t visited in decades. She wants to find again the people who were once important in her life.
During this journey, Pertiwi meets Kuntet and Mak Ira. Unfortunately, both live in dire conditions due to how society treats them.
Kuntet is caged because he is thought to have a mental disorder, even though he is a person with a disability. Meanwhile, Mak Ira is forced to live in her stall in the middle of the Tengger Mountains because the community rejects her due to her past as a former sex worker.
This situation makes Pertiwi even more aware of how harsh life is in her hometown. She sees a community that loves to judge others but closes its eyes to the problems in their own environment.
Brothels are demolished in the name of morality, but alcohol and gambling are allowed to continue. Corrupt officials are still retained, while people considered different are excluded from social life.
