Crunchyroll now holds the North American and global licensing rights for the animated movie titled The Apothecary Diaries: The Late Lady’s Treasure. The distribution will be handled by Crunchyroll together with Sony Pictures Entertainment, though exact theatrical release dates have not yet been revealed. The global deal does not cover Asia but does encompass India.
This production marks the debut theatrical installment of the The Apothecary Diaries series, introducing a fresh intrigue penned by the franchise’s original author. Direction is overseen by Norihiro Naganuma, while TOHO Animation STUDIO takes charge of the animation work. Its Japanese premiere is set for December 11, 2026.
The film’s official synopsis is as follows:
The stage is set for a fresh enigma involving a concealed treasure beneath a waterfront metropolis.
The sovereign assigns Jinshi a mandate: to fulfill the final wish of a concubine who died five years earlier by escorting her back to her native land.
In pursuit of this repatriation, Jinshi inspects the corpse and finds it remarkably well-preserved; she appears as though still breathing.
Determined to unravel the secret of these remains, Jinshi recruits Maomao for a trek to Binan-shu, the southern domain governed by the Bi clan.
Upon reaching a lively water‑side city, Maomao marvels at unfamiliar herbs and medicinal plants, yet the atmosphere is tense as ruthless pirates hunt for the loot hidden by their deceased commander.
“May nothing go wrong…”
Jinshi’s dire warning materializes. On the day of the concubine’s funeral, a massive upheaval unfolds, setting off a cascade of unforeseen events.
The light‑novel series The Apothecary Diaries is penned by Natsu Hyuga and illustrated by Toko Shino, with serialization handled by Shunfunotomo. It has been adapted into two manga versions: one scripted by Itsuki Nanao and drawn by Nekokurage, and another created wholly by Minoji Kurata.
J‑Novel Club releases the work in English, whereas Square Enix handles the manga edition. The narrative centers on Maomao, a budding apothecary forced into the imperial palace as a menial attendant. Unwilling to conform, she eventually assists Jinshi, the palace’s elegant bureaucrat.
In addition, the property has just secured its inaugural live‑action television series and debut video‑game release. The manga titled The Failure at God School, whose storyline is crafted by Natsu Hyuga, has likewise just received confirmation for an anime version.
