Thecuy.com, Jakarta – The National Nutrition Agency (BGN) conducts a trial of free nutritious meals (MBG) using a buffet system in schools. This initiative aims to improve the management of the MBG program to be more effective and efficient. The head of BGN, Sudaryono, said the trial has been carried out in over 60 SPPG kitchens and is expected to be expanded to various regions.

“As of today, we have piloted the program in possibly more than 60 kitchens for a class buffet. The food is brought hot to the classroom and then served there. We hope for prayers and support so we can expand further,” said Sudaryono when met at the Kementan Office in Jakarta.

Even though the buffet system is used, Sudaryono stressed that the MBG meals are still prepared by SPPG. This scheme has been implemented in several countries, such as Japan, and is expected to maintain food freshness and reduce the risk of food spoilage that could affect health.

“It’s definitely fresher because there’s no time delay, thus reducing the risk of food spoilage that could cause health issues. Moreover, there’s a very important educational function in this process,” he said.

In the buffet system, students are involved in food service. Some students are selected to serve meals to their peers in a buffet style. “In this buffet setup, the kitchens are trained, and the schools are also trained. Since the servers are students, they have a duty roster. It’s similar to how it is in Japan,” he added.

Sudaryono also explained that this system can lower the quantity of leftover or uneaten food, thereby decreasing food waste from the MBG program. “The rate of food being finished is good. It means it’s fresher, and if someone wants more, there’s still some left to add. So the waste is less,” he said.

The MBG buffet trial is being conducted in various regions, including Central Java, East Java, Yogyakarta, Papua, and several other areas. It is hoped that this program will raise students’ awareness of the importance of balanced nutrition and reduce food waste in schools.
