Thecuy.com, Jakarta – The National Nutrition Agency (BGN) has launched a pilot free nutritious meal (MBG) program using a buffet system in schools. The initiative seeks to improve the implementation of the MBG program for better efficiency and effectiveness. BGN Head, Sudaryono, stated that the trial has been carried out in over 60 SPPG kitchens and is expected to expand to various regions.

As of today, we have been piloting in perhaps more than 60 kitchens for classroom buffets. The food is brought hot to the classroom and then served there. We hope for prayers and support so we can expand further,” Sudaryono said when met at the Ministry of Agriculture office in Jakarta.

Even though a buffet system is used, Sudaryono stressed that MBG meals are still prepared by SPPG. This approach has been adopted in several countries such as Japan and is expected to preserve food freshness and reduce the risk of spoilage that could harm health.

It’s definitely fresher because there’s no time delay. This reduces the risk of food spoilage that could cause health problems. Additionally, there’s an important educational component in this process,” he said.

In the buffet model, students take part in food service. Some pupils are selected to serve meals to their peers in a buffet style. “In this buffet system, both the kitchens and the schools receive training. Since the servers are students, they rotate on duty. It’s similar to what they do in Japan,” he added.

Sudaryono also explained that this system can lower the amount of leftover or uneaten food, thereby cutting food waste from the MBG program. “The rate at which meals are finished is good. It means the food stays fresh, and if someone wants seconds, there are still portions available. Therefore, waste is reduced,” he said.

The MBG buffet trial is being conducted across multiple regions, including Central Java, East Java, Yogyakarta, Papua, and other areas. The program aims to boost students’ awareness of balanced nutrition and to diminish food waste in schools.
