Thecuy.com – Britain’s government is now weighing a possible increase in import duties on Chinese battery electric vehicles (BEVs) to as much as 45%. This move mirrors a more protectionist stance adopted by the European Union towards electric cars made in the Celestial Empire.

The proposal has not been finalised yet. The UK authorities are still in talks with the automotive sector before deciding, amid concerns that any tariff could trigger retaliatory measures from China against British products.

Currently, Chinese electric cars entering the UK are subject to a 10% import tariff. The European Union, meanwhile, adds an extra anti‑subsidy duty that varies by manufacturer on top of the 10% base rate.

Pressure to raise the tariff has intensified as Chinese brands have gained market share in the UK. In September 2026 Chinese makes accounted for over 20% of new‑car sales, with the Jaecoo 7 emerging as the month’s top‑selling model at 10,813 units.

At the same time, Britain is caught in a dilemma because its automotive industry is tightly linked to the European market. The EU is reportedly urging the UK to align its tariff policy so that vehicles produced there continue to be treated as “Made in Europe” under the forthcoming Industrial Accelerator Act.
