The Straw Hat Pirates possess unique abilities across various fields. Behind their greatness lie important figures who have guided and helped them grow. Here are the characters who have served as mentors to the Straw Hat crew in One Piece.
Interestingly, almost every crew member has an important mentor, even if their relationship is not strictly that of a teacher and student. Here are nine figures who played a major role in shaping the abilities of the Straw Hat members.
Characters Who Became Mentors of the Straw Hat Crew
1. Silvers Rayleigh – Luffy’s Mentor
For Monkey D. Luffy, the person who played the most significant role in enhancing his combat abilities after the Marineford War was Silvers Rayleigh.
Rayleigh was the former vice captain of the Roger Pirates and a legendary figure in the world of One Piece. He recognized great potential in Luffy and offered to guide him when the captain realized he was still not strong enough to face threats in the New World.
For two years, Luffy trained alongside Rayleigh. One of the most important lessons he learned was how to use and develop Haki. The results of this training were evident after the time skip, when Luffy’s combat abilities increased significantly.
2. Dracule Mihawk – Guru Zoro
Zoro’s relationship with his mentor might be one of the most unique. The person who guided him was, after all, someone he had long sought to defeat.
Mihawk once inflicted a crushing defeat on Zoro in a battle. However, after the events at Sabaody, the two ended up spending time training together.
For two years, Mihawk helped Zoro refine his swordsmanship while also enhancing his mastery of Haki. This training became one of the crucial foundations for Zoro’s growth as a swordsman.
3. Haredas – Mentor Nami
As a navigator, understanding weather is a crucial part of Nami’s journey. This skill further developed when she was in Weatheria and met a scientist named Haredas.
Haredas introduced Nami to various knowledge about weather and atmospheric phenomena. He also helped her understand how weather conditions could be utilized in combat.
This knowledge later became one of Nami’s strengths. After rejoining the crew, her navigation skills continued to improve, and her weather-based combat techniques became more effective.
4. Heracles – Pembimbing Usopp
Usopp gained important experience while he was in the Boin Islands. There, he met Heracles, a figure who later helped develop his abilities.
Heracles introduced Usopp to various types of plants found on the islands. Usopp later used this knowledge to develop plant-based weapons and ammunition.
But not only his combat skills grew; Usopp also received encouragement to become more confident. This was crucial for his development as a marksman.
5. Zeff – Guru sekaligus Sosok Ayah bagi Sanji
When discussing mentors who have the closest relationship with their disciples, Zeff stands out as one of the best examples.
Zeff not only taught Sanji about the world of cooking but also shaped life principles that later became an important part of Sanji’s personality.
From Zeff, Sanji learned that food holds great value and a cook should respect everyone who needs it. Additionally, Zeff instilled strong principles about how Sanji should treat women.
Their relationship eventually grew far beyond that of a teacher and student. Zeff became a father figure who was very meaningful to Sanji.
6. Dr. Kureha – Guru Chopper
Tony Tony Chopper had two important figures who shaped his life: Hiriluk and Dr. Kureha.
After Hiriluk’s death, Kureha took on a major role in Chopper’s life. She raised him and taught him medical science.
While Hiriluk inspired Chopper about the meaning of being a doctor who helps others, Kureha provided the knowledge and skills needed to realize that ambition.
Thanks to this learning process, Chopper later developed into a doctor who became very important to the Straw Hat Pirates.
7. Clover – Sosok Penting dalam Perkembangan Robin
Unlike other crew members, Nico Robin’s development was more closely related to science and history.
When she was young in Ohara, Robin received attention from scholars who studied world history. One of the most influential figures in her life was Professor Clover.
Clover helped Robin understand the world of science and history. He was also one of the people who recognized Robin’s great potential in studying Poneglyphs.
This knowledge later became an important part of Robin’s journey with the Straw Hats, especially because her ability to read Poneglyphs was directly related to the great mysteries of One Piece.
8. Tom – Guru Franky dalam Dunia Perkapalan
Before becoming the Straw Hats’ cyborg and main shipwright, Franky had learned a lot from a legendary shipbuilder named Tom.
Tom was a figure with an outstanding reputation in the world of shipbuilding. He was even known as the builder of the Oro Jackson, the ship of Gol D. Roger.
Young Franky was given the opportunity to learn shipbuilding from Tom. It was here that Franky’s abilities as a shipwright began to develop.
Tom’s influence on Franky was not only reflected in his shipbuilding skills but also in the way Franky viewed ships and the freedom a shipbuilder possessed.
9. Fisher Tiger – Panutan bagi Jinbe
Fisher Tiger may not have had a teacher-student relationship with Jinbe like Rayleigh did with Luffy or Mihawk with Zoro. However, his influence on Jinbe was enormous.
As the captain of the Sun Pirates, Fisher Tiger was a figure respected by Jinbe. He showed courage in facing discrimination and mistreatment experienced by fish men.
Tiger’s thoughts and struggles helped shape Jinbe’s perspective on the relationship between humans and fish men. Jinbe later carried these values in his life’s journey and tried to fight for peace between the two races.
