Thecuy.com, Malang – A number of students from SMPN 18 Malang City are alleged to have been subjected to physical abuse by the principal, identified as A. The incident occurred on Thursday morning before classes began, on 24 September 2026.
The situation began when a student who wasn’t yet wearing the traditional Javanese lurik uniform was treated harshly by the principal. A student identified as S said he was slapped three times in a row without being given a chance to explain why his uniform didn’t match. As a result, the student’s eyes turned red and his cheek swelled.
Sudden Lurik Uniform Regulation
The regulation requiring kebaya or traditional lurik attire on Thursday was introduced abruptly by the new principal, leaving many students unprepared for the requirement. An eighth-grade student explained that the mandatory lurik clothing rule only applied to seventh graders, while eighth and ninth grades had no written policy.
As a result of this sudden rule, some students bought the wrong uniform model and it didn’t match the requirements. The principal is said to have become angry and immediately physically assaulted students who weren’t wearing the uniform according to the rules.
Suspected Violence and Intimidation
In addition to S, another student identified as W experienced similar treatment. W said he was hit while trying to shake his teacher’s hand at the school gate and felt pain in his left cheek. W also mentioned intimidation against students who recorded the violent incident, where they were threatened with disciplinary points or expulsion if they didn’t delete the video.
Parental Response
The violent incident sparked protests from parents on Friday, 25 September 2026. A number of parents went to SMPN 18 Malang City, causing classes to be temporarily halted. One parent, Rulli, said his child was a victim of assault, with injuries to his face and actions such as slapping, pinching and tweezing.
Rulli learned about the incident after receiving a video recording from another parent. Rulli’s child was initially reluctant to talk because he was afraid of being intimidated, and he regretted the principal’s repressive actions in implementing the uniform rule without adequate socialization.
Consequences and Importance of School Rule Socialization
This incident highlights the importance of clear and fair rule socialization and implementation in the school environment. Physical violence and intimidation must not be used as methods of discipline enforcement, especially on students who are still in their learning and developmental phase.
The relevant parties are expected to conduct a thorough investigation into the alleged violence and ensure the protection of students’ rights so that similar violations do not occur in the future.
