Thecuy.com, Palembang – The Palembang City Government has identified 12 locations vulnerable to waterlogging on several main roads and has prepared action plans to lessen flood impacts during heavy rainfall. The actions include constructing and enlarging drainage channels and procuring portable pumps as a preventive measure against puddles.

A direct inspection was carried out by the Palembang City Government on Wednesday, 23 September 2026, focusing on the Simpang Polda area, Indo Global Mandiri University (UIGM), Bay Salim Street, Mayor Ruslan Street, up to Residen Abdul Rozak Street. The UIGM area received special attention because it often experiences high flooding during rain.

Strategy for Infrastructure Management

The Assistant II of the Palembang City Secretary’s Office, Isnaini Madani, explained the plan to build a double cross drain in the UIGM area, which currently has only one drainage channel. This construction is scheduled for 2027 by the National Road Implementation Agency (BBPJN) because the road is classified as a national road.

In addition, on Bay Salim Street, the cross drain will be enlarged using the Palembang City APBD because it is a city road. On Mayor Ruslan Street, a drainage channel approximately 160 meters long is also planned, which will be connected to the mouth of the Bendung River.

On Residen Abdul Rozak Street, an inspection revealed a blockage caused by sedimentation of mud, sand, and accumulated garbage that hindered water flow. The City Government emphasized the importance of regular channel cleaning to address pooling in the area.

Short‑Term Steps and Community Role

Palembang Mayor, Ratu Dewa, stated that current handling is prioritized at 12 pooling points on main roads, even though there are 28 other points in the city area. The Public Works and Spatial Planning Agency (PUPR), together with related teams, has been asked to immediately formulate short‑ and long‑term handling measures.

To anticipate pooling during heavy rain, the City Government will also deploy portable pumps. Coordination with the River Board and the National Road Board is carried out for handling that falls outside the City Government’s authority.

Ratu Dewa also invited district heads and village chiefs to mobilize the community to intensify mutual cooperation to clean water channels from garbage, which is the main cause of blocked drains. He emphasized that the waste problem cannot be solved by PU officers alone.
