Kakao Entertainment intends to shut down Kakao Webtoon and Tapas, merging them into KakaoPage by the end of 2026, according to a September 22 report from IT Chosun. Tapas serves as the company’s North American webtoon and web novel platform, having been acquired from a U.S. firm in a $510 million USD deal in 2021.
The consolidation will combine roughly 16,000 original intellectual properties (IPs) and user data from both Kakao Webtoon and KakaoPage onto a single platform. Kakao Entertainment is expected to disclose a detailed transition schedule for users of both services on September 29.
The report says that most Kakao Webtoon users’ reading histories, any remaining cash balances, and unused paid reading passes will be transferred to KakaoPage. The company will issue separate guidance outlining which assets are eligible and how the transfers will operate.
The report also mentions that Kakao Entertainment will use the combined platforms’ payment and subscription data to develop AI‑based content recommendations. Its creator and partner networks, content production operations, and marketing resources will be unified under KakaoPage.
