**Thecuy.com, Jakarta** – The Indonesian national team’s custodian, Maarten Paes, is back in the spotlight after delivering a series of eye‑catching saves during Ajax Amsterdam’s training session. A 48‑second video posted on the club’s official account captures Paes deflecting a powerful shot from a teammate with swift reflexes, using both his hands and feet, prompting cheers and compliments from his fellow players at Sportpark De Toekomst.
This performance arrives before Ajax faces Fortuna Sittard in week six of the 2026/2027 Eredivisie. While Marc‑André ter Stegen remains the first choice between the posts, Paes occupies a bench role, staying ready to intervene if a chance presents itself. Ajax’s 3‑1 defeat to PSV in early September has intensified defensive concerns, and Emil Audero’s move to Rayo Vallecano further heightens the competition for the Indo‑Dutch keeper.
The clip shows Paes using more than just his fists; he repeatedly blocks the ball with his feet, underscoring his grasp of positioning and quick response. Every interception is met with shouts of encouragement from his teammates, reflecting the squad’s trust in his abilities.
Indonesian netizens’ reactions were mixed. Instead of pushing for Paes to start, some social‑media users joked that he should stay on the bench, especially given that Ajax will take on Fortuna Sittard, a team coached by Justin Hubner and Ole Romeny. Several comments suggested a psychological angle, proposing that Paes’s display might serve to unsettle the opposition.
Ajax’s director of football, Jordi Cruyff, stressed that Paes’s value extends beyond the minutes he plays, noting his diligent practice sessions and the positive impact he has on team morale. Cruyff described Paes as a figure who helps maintain squad harmony while remaining ready to inject energy whenever called upon.
Looking ahead, Paes stays an important asset for Ajax in rotation scenarios, particularly within the Conference League. His performance during practice reassures the manager that he can be relied upon when given the nod, offering optimism to Indonesian fans eager for his standout performance on the continental stage.
